Emily

Kim and Emily

The last time we visited my parents church I saw my friend Miss Emily. We originally met years ago helping out in the Sonshine Ministry at church. It is a Sunday School class designed for children who needed one on one assistance and care during the morning service. It was here that God started our friendship because He knew that I would need her!

You see, Emily got sick as a child and ended up in a coma. When she woke up neurological damage had been done. She has spent her whole life overcoming obstacles and learning to do everything again. So, Emily knew exactly how I felt as I was learning to walk in her shoes with my ALS. Each time we would come to visit I would be struggling with something new but Emily always understood!

This last visit she did something for me that I will always remember. While everyone was singing praise and worship songs Emily came over, put her cane down, and lifted my hand in the air. As Emily sang out wholeheartedly and waved my floppy hand back and forth I cried. I felt like she was showing me in a precious way, "This is how we do it!" Emily has allowed God to transform her pain into courage, eyes to see possibilities, and compassion.

Romans 12:11-13

Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
