My Pigs

My Pigs

January is usually the time of year when we set goals to improve some way. We look around at what other people have accomplished and they inspire us. If they can do it, so can I! We are willing to give up what we enjoy, start doing what is uncomfortable, and learn to be the best version of ourselves. However, there is always a limit to how much we are really willing to change!  The account of Jesus casting out demons and they go into a herd of pigs and they run over a cliff and drown has been bothering me (Matthew 8, Mark 5, Luke 8). When the people around the area heard what happened they came to see for themselves. Their reaction has been convicting me. They were afraid and angry and demanded that Jesus leave! Why? Here in front of them the former demon possessed man was a powerful example of the change Jesus could make.  The fact that they had a herd of pigs in Israel is a Red Flag. If pork was forbidden in the Jewish diet by God what were they doing? When they sent Jesus away demonstrated that they loved their lifestyle more than they wanted to change. How often do I do the same? I have been doing some soul searching. What are my pigs? What are the things that I value more than truly changing? When do I tell Jesus to leave me alone?  In 2020 I have a new resolution...embrace Jesus and let Him have His way with me! I want the thrill of a former demon possessed man's story to continue with me!

Mark 5:18-20

As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him.  Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.
